Police have moved swiftly to arrest and charge someone for the murder which claimed the life of 58-year-old Mirna Young. Jahnon Trapp, a 28-year-old resident of Esperanza Village, Cayo was arrested and charged by police for the murder for which he has been arraigned and remanded.
The unfortunate incident took place at Young home on Perez Street in Santa Elena Town, Cayo. Around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, Young’s son, Mynor Galindo, and a friend were standing inside the fenced yard when two men on a motorcycle approached them. A lone man, who held a firearm, descended the bike and opened fire on the duo. They attempted to run for cover but were pursued to the rear of the house. While leaving, the gunman opened fired into the house and that is when Young, who was inside the house with her mother and grandchildren, was shot. Also shot was the friend, Angel Martinez. Young was shot to the chest and succumbed to the injury at the hospital but Martinez’s injuries were stabilized.
Police are not ruling out that the murder is linked to previous homicide in the area as part of a festering dispute between rival groups in the west. It is known that Mirna’s son, George Galindo, was recently arraigned and remanded to the Belize Central Prison for the murder of Nelson Flores. Trapp now joins Galindo on remand at the same institution.
Flores was shot and killed inside his house just a couple blocks away from Young’s residence. Residents and the family believe that the incidents are related. Police have reportedly held mediation sessions with the two warring gangs in this area.
