Mirna Young, a 58-year-old mother of six, was gunned down while she was inside her home on Perez Street in Santa Elena Town, Cayo. Around 8:30 p.m. pm Wednesday, September 18, 2019, Young’s son, Mynor Galindo, and a friend were standing inside the fenced yard when two men on a motorcycle approached them. A lone man descended the bike, wielding a firearm, and opened fire on the duo. They ran for cover but were pursued to the back of the house. While leaving, the gunman opened fired into the house and that is when Young, who was inside the house with her mother and grandchildren, was shot. Also shot was the friend, Angel Martinez, and while he is in a stable condition, Young succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Upon the police’s arrival, they observed Young with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest area. They also observed Martinez with an apparent gunshot wound to the lower back. They were both transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where Young succumbed while undergoing treatment.
A police patrol car had left the area just minutes before the horrific incident. David Young, Young’s husband, says that he was just minutes away from home when he learnt of his wife’s passing.
Police are not ruling out that the murder is linked to another homicide in the area as part of a festering dispute between rival groups in the west. It is known that Mirna’s son, George Galindo, was recently arraigned and remanded to central prison for the murder of Nelson Flores. Flores was shot and killed inside his house just a couple blocks away from the Young residence. Residents and the family believe that the incidents are related. While police could not confirm whether Wednesday night’s murder is retaliatory, ACP Joseph Myvett says that they are looking at all angles. They are seeking several persons of interest.
