On Independence Day, September 21, 2019, while the nation was celebrating, personnel from the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and the Belize Coast Guard were busy delivering assistance to fire victims on the Island of Caye Caulker affected by an early morning blaze.
The supplies were transported to the island with the help of Belize Defender Aircraft and a Belize Coast Guard vessel, arranged by National Emergency Coordinator Colonel (Ret) Shelton Defour.
The relief mission was led by NEMO Central Region Coordinator Al Westby and Belize Rural South Coordinator Vanessa Parham, who were also assisted by NEMO Belmopan Assistant Coordinator Dalton Eiley. The BDF Defender Aircraft was flown by Major Adran Claude Ramírez.
The fire, which destroyed a two floor building, has left four families homeless.
