Belize and the Republic of China (ROC) (Taiwan) continues to celebrate diplomatic relations, and we have recently made a 30-year mark. Through those relations, Belize has been recipient to a number of benefits including scholarship programs in which Belizeans have gone to study in ROC Taiwan and advancements in agriculture. Quite recently, the Government of Belize (GOB) signed a USD $50 million loan agreement for roads with Taiwan.
To commemorate our 30th year of diplomatic relations, a number of activities have been going on in Belize, starting with a Taiwan Day fair. One of the most recent of those activities has been the release of postal stamps to celebrate the anniversary.
There are $0.25 stamps, which depict the flags of both nations; $1 stamps, which show the Great Blue Hole of Belize and the Jade Mountain of Taiwan; and $5 stamps on which are the keel-billed toucan, national bird of Belize, and the blue magpie, national bird of ROC (Taiwan).
At the official release which took place at the Great House Inn on Thursday, September 12, 2019, Hon. Edmond Castro, Minister of Transport and NEMO, was along with Ambassador of Taiwan to Belize, H.E. Remus Li-Kuo Chen. Ambassador Chen recalled that the idea for the stamps were discussed with Belize’s Postal Service from which an affirmative response was garnered. Minister Castro, in talking about the stamps, said that they will traverse the world, showcasing the friendship between the two countries. “This is all a part of the diplomatic relationship that we have enjoyed for over thirty years and we will continue to enjoy diplomatic relations with Taiwan as long as we are here,” he said.
