A burglary at the home of a teacher ended badly for one of two accused burglars. Leon Duncan, a 26-year-old security guard and resident of Ladyville, arrived in court in a wheelchair on Thursday, August 29, 2019. He was there to answer to the crime of burglary. Duncan appeared before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson. He was unrepresented in court and pleaded not guilty to the crime and told the court that the police had injured him.
It is alleged that Duncan stole close to $9,000 worth of items, including several cellphones, electronics, and jewelry, from the Belize City home of Melvin Armstrong. According to reports, Armstrong arrived at his home after midnight on August 22, 2019 and caught two men running out of his house. He set chase behind them and caught up with Duncan. Armstrong says he was able to hold down Duncan, who had scaled the fence. Police were able to detain Duncan at the scene.
Because Duncan pleaded not guilty and there was no objection to bail, he was offered bail in the sum of $3,000 plus two sureties of $1,500 each which he was able to meet. He was ordered to stay away from Armstrong and any other witnesses. Before leaving the court room, Duncan was advised to get medical assistance for his injuries and that complaints against the police be made to the Professional Standard Branch.
