Police have managed to solve the case of murder in which an elderly woman was killed. An 18-year-old resident of Camalote Village, Derry Bennett, has been remanded for the murder of 69-year-old Ofelia Cruz. She was killed on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 when she was beaten inside her home in the Salt Creek area of Sand Hill Village. Cruz, a Mexican national, was reportedly struck over the head with a hammer during a home invasion in which two men were said to have been looking for her husband’s firearm which was taken during the invasion.
For the crime, Bennett appeared before Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer on Monday, August 23, 2019. Because the charge of murder is an indictable offense, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 25, 2019.
Police believe that the murder was committed by two persons and it is understood that Bennett’s brother is being sought in connection to the murder.
