A note from the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council SISE, issued last week, reminds the public that Belize’s tinting laws are now being prepared for enforcement. The Traffic Department in San Ignacio is the recent recipient of both tinting meters and speed guns to ensure that the proper enforcements are being carried out.

The SISE Traffic Department began the educational campaign of SI No 19 of 2011 on Monday, which became effective on July 1, 2011. It is in regard to the illegal tint on vehicle windows. The Traffic Department warns that individuals caught contravening this regulation commit an offence and are liable on summary conviction of not less than a fine of $150.00 and not more than $500.00

A post from the SISE Traffic Department also makes clear that it will implement the enforcement of the speed radar gun to ensure motorist and peoples’ safety within the Municipality of San Ignacio and Santa Elena.

In previous years, the People’s Coalition of Cayo PCC, during the epitome of its existence, had advised the Police that the tinting of windows opens up opportunities to nefarious activities. The PCC had strongly advised the enforcement of the tinting laws.

Head of the traffic department in San Ignacio Bernz  Mendez tells the Guardian that it is all in an effort to keep both pedestrians and motorists within the Municipality safe. He reports that motorists have been speeding along the Loma Luz Boulevard in Santa Elena. Mendez also warned that there will be zero tolerance on the tinting of windows for both public vehicles and taxis, as it does not allow adequate visibility on the inside.

The Traffic Department will be conducting educational sessions today by distributing flyers and reaching out to the public. Actual enforcement of the tinting laws within the Twin Towns will begin in the next two weeks.
