Walking in Her Shoes

We walked in her shoes
Through sixteen days of activism.
Some asked why women stay in abusive conditions
Many failed to understand the reality.

She walked in her shoes
Through most of her life
But one day she walked in her shoes
Right out of the abuse.

She packed up her children
She packed up her belongings and walked.
She walked in her shoes to another town
Thought she had left it all behind her.

But he walked in his shoes
And tracked her down.
He could not respect her decision
To walk away in her own shoes.

If I can’t have you then no-one can
The old deadly refrain that will not be silenced.
Shouting, pleading and then a blinding rage
A primeval urge in a modern time.

She walked a hard road in her shoes
She walked towards freedom in her shoes
The most dangerous walk a woman can take
Away from an abuser.

Now she lies dead in her shoes
And her lover/killer pleads guilty.
Traumatized children, ruined lives
No one wins, all are losers.

Can no one fill the shoes of a guardian?
Can no one stop the killing?
Sixteen days of activism loses to
A few moments of deadly rage.

Lay out the shoes of all the victims
Shoes that walk around the world.
Mourn them all and con
