Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development and Social Transformation has been suspended from his post for a period of six months.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow explains that Coy’s suspension comes after he intervened on behalf of one of his constitutents who brought in uncustomed, prohibited goods into the country. After Coy intervened, the goods were turned over to him and the Prime Minister has decided that “the Minister’s intervention constituted a lack of judgement and could be viewed as an abuse of his Ministerial position.” As a result of this, Minister Coy will be suspended from his post as Minister of State for a period of six months.

The Prime Minister says that the suspension is without pay. The United Democratic Party government came into office on an overwhelming mandate to ensure transparency, accountability as well as a platform to ensure that corruption is stomped out of government. With the suspension of Minister Coy, it proves that Hon. Dean Barrow’s government is serious about ensuring that even at the slightest hint of wrong doing even Ministers can be held accountable.
