Four men, known to police, have been arrested in connection to an armed robbery at Family City Imports on George Price Drive in Dangriga Town. The store was targeted at around 8:35 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019 when four men, one wielding a twelve gauge sawed-off shotgun and two others armed with handguns, barged into the store. Bystanders quickly scattered in fear and even employees at the store took cover. Three of the culprits secured the store while the fourth person jumped over the counter to ransack the cash register. They made off with as much as $3,000 before escaping on foot, completing the crime in under two minutes.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City, says that the Belize Police Department  relied on surveillance footage, which showed the armed robbery being committed. From those footage, police were able to quickly nab three of the four persons believed to have been involved in the crime. Three of the four have been arrested and charged for robbery. They are Fredrick Anthony Arzu, 39, Marvin Amaya, 34, and Travan Smith, 20. The fourth person, who was arrested at a later date, is Edmond Camal and he was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.

The police recovered a shotgun and a pistol suspected to have been used in the execution of the robbery but no cash was recovered.

With the spike in crimes happening just on the outskirts of cities and other large and populated municipalities, the Belize Police Department and Commissioner of Police Chester Williams have issued some advisories. Business owners are urged to deposit large amounts of monies with some frequency in order to not have large quantities of cash on hand. They are also advised to report any suspicious activity, not to open beyond opening hours, deter loitering in and around businesses, only advise a small number of employees where cash it kept, and to perform a background check on prospective employees.
