U.S. Navy Admiral Craig Faller, Commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), visited Belize from May 8 to 10 and met with both civilian and military leaders to discuss bilateral security cooperation with Belizean counterparts in support of regional peace and stability in the Western Hemisphere.  Belize and the United States enjoy a close security cooperation and enduring partnership in the areas of mutual interest that include research and development, information exchanges, training and education, joint military exercises, and commercial initiatives related to defense matters.

During his visit, Admiral Faller met with Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, and other senior government officials, during which he congratulated the PM and Minister of National Security Hon. John Saldivar on a successful ICJ referendum. He extended his commitment to strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two countries’ professional defense forces. Also during his visit, Admiral Faller got an opportunity to meet with both Coast Guard and the BDF to discuss opportunities and challenges.

The Admiral’s long-planned visit to Belize follows earlier visits by previous SOUTHCOM commanders, Admiral Kurt Tidd in 2016, and General John Kelly in 2013, and reflects the longstanding and close military ties between our two nations.
