Classes resumed normally on Monday at the Mount Carmel Primary School in Benque Viejo del Carmen following a successful meeting at 2:00 p.m on Friday between management, the Teaching Services Commission and the Ministry of Education. At that meeting, it was agreed that the school’s management will be providing payment for the teachers, who had not been paid for up to three months.

Teachers from Mount Carmel Roman Catholic in Benque were joined by teachers from  La Immaculada RC School from Arenal and the Holy Cross RC from Calla Creek for a show of strength on Friday. Parents were also observed with teachers from Mount Carmel in their demonstration on the streets of Benque on Friday.

It all started last Wednesday when teachers from the Mount Carmel Primary School walked out of their classrooms in solidarity with several of its teachers, who felt that they had been negatively impacted. Ana Pech, who has been teaching for 29 years was not satisfied with a letter that had been received from the Teaching Services Commission.

Mount Carmel Primary alone has 41 teachers and 937 students and classes were not held as normal due to the protests last Wednesday and Friday.
