Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow announced on Monday, October 29th that the push to improve the country’s infrastructure is continuing without slowing down. He noted that currently the Airport Link road between Mile 8 on the George Price Highway and Ladyville is moving apace.

He also stated that the construction of the Coastal Road which is worth some 80 million dollars and is being financed by the British government, is moving into the conclusion of the feasibility study. Thereafter the PM stated that it will move to the design stage before it goes into construction. The project’s feasibility study got off earlier this year and is nearing completion.

Also announced was that the design has been completed for the Caracol road which will be financed with funding from OFID and the Kuwaiti fund to the tune of 90 million dollars. PM Barrow stated that “the design is done; the supervision consultants just about chosen; and the selection of the construction contractor and start of the physical works will happen no later than the end of this year.”

He also explained that the rebuilding of the Hummingbird Highway will be complete by the third quarter of next year. He said that, “the contract has been awarded for the replacement of bridges and improvement and road-widening works, which together constitute the last remaining section of the Highway’s reconstruction.”

Another part of the infrastructure works the PM mentioned was the replacement of the Haulover Bridge. He said that the design for the bridge is now complete and, “an Italian specialist firm has been recruited to help choose and supervise the contractor. Pre-qualification applications have already been received from local contractors, and the final tender award will be completed this very quarter with actual construction to start by year end.” The bridge is complementary to the upgrade of the Philip Goldson Highway from the Airport Road intersection to the Buttonwood Bay Roundabout.

Two new bridges will also be built in the Corozal district to link Sarteneja, Chunux and Copper bank. These will be constructed at the ferry crossings at Laguna Seca  and Pueblo Nuevo.

The PM did not add to the list of roadworks currently taking place the upgrade of the George Price Highway between Roaring Creek to Benque Viejo. Accompanying those works is the construction of a new bridge to replace the one at Roaring Creek.
