The Ministry of Health has once again reminded the public that the flu vaccine is now available at all public health centers around Belize.

Sharon Cooper-Espinoza, Nurse Administrator for the Expanded Immunization Program within the Ministry of Health informs the Guardian that we are now in the flu season and the vaccine now available reduces the chances of getting influenza. Even if the person does get Influenza the severity of the illness is much reduced.

The influenza vaccine is given each season and on an annual basis. Each vaccine shot will suffice for the flu period and by the time the other flu season comes around, another flu vaccine iteration will become available.

Such a flu vaccine is funded through the Government of Belize. Procurement of the vaccine is done by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Belize “…where PAHO uses manufacturers, where products have been tested and proven to be effective,” says Espinoza.

“I will encourage persons who have children between the ages of six months to 23 months, pregnant women, persons 65 years and over, persons living with chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart condition, to check with their doctors and see if they qualify for the vaccine.”
