After months of getting a facelift, the Caye Caulker Municipal Airport was inaugurated on Friday, September 7, 2018. At the inauguration ceremony at the airstrip, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Manuel Heredia, along with members for the Belize Airport Authority and the Belize Tourism Board were joined by Chairlady of the island, Enelda Rosado, and other prestigious and invited guests.

Flights from Caye Caulker, both from Maya Island Air and Tropic Air, were suspended in October 2017 after the airstrip was deemed a safety hazard. With the inauguration of the airstrip, those safety hazards are now out the window as the BAA showed off the new safety and expansion restorations, all totaling to $3.6 million. That includes hot mix asphalt to runway lights, necessary to accommodate late and emergency flights.

Minister Heredia expounds on the new features of the airstrip saying, “The engineering fees include substantial work done to the runway with the laying of thousands of yards of geo-grade to provide stability. Over 24,000 cubic yards of filling material were also spread and compacted. The new runway is now asphalted with hot mix and is 2,840 feet long by 40 feet wide with 10-foot shoulders on each side providing greater safety and comfort to users and operators. Essential margins and lighting system is in compliance with IKO standards have also been installed. Important features of the runway design include threshold markings, runway orientation numbers, runway marking, center line marking, taxi center line, runway hold position markings and aircraft parking stalls with transversal stop line. The installed modern lighting system is impressive and will now facilitate night-time flights and emergency flights to and from the island. In terms of security, I can announce that the aerodrome will be fenced to ensure security and safety.”

Also, in terms of what the new airstrip will bring for the island, Minister Heredia says, “The newly renovated Caye Caulker Municipal Airport is an example of yet another modern and safe aerodrome now available to all users. The Caye Caulker Municipal Airport is one of the most active local airport having facilitated approximately 24,000 flights and 92,000 passengers over a 6-year period. Those figures are expected to grow steadily over the next few years.”
