A sibling disagreement over who is taking better care of their ill mother landed a brother in court for allegedly harming his sister. Edwin Pavon, a 39-year-old stevedore and resident of Caesar Ridge Road, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Pavon, who was unrepresented, was read a single charge of harm when he went before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser.

Pavon pleaded guilty to the charge but not without an explanation. According to him, he is the sole breadwinner of the family and that he and his sister are the only ones that care for their amputee mother. He said that on the day of the incident, he was talking with a friend when his sister came up to them and accused him of talking about her. That is when she made up the story that he kicked her.

Because of his explanation, his guilty plea was rejected and an equivocal plea of not guilty was entered. He was offered bail in the sum of $600 plus one surety of the same. Pavon was previously convicted on a drug offense and was ordered to clear that bill before posting bail for this charge. He is due back in court on July 19, 2018.
