Verdes FC and the Belmopan Bandits in the finals of the Premier League Football Championship Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize 2017 Opening Season is fast winding down. The semi-final round came to an end on Sunday 26th November, with both the defending champions Belmopan Bandits and Verdes FC advancing to the championship round.

At the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, the defending champions Belmopan Bandits advance to the championship round again when it defeated the San Pedro Pirates by the score of 3-1.

The Belmopan Bandits was the first on the scoreboard when Georgie Welcome scored the 1st of his 2 goals in the 3rd minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. The lead was extended when Georgie Welcome scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 34th minute of play that gave his team a 2-0 lead.

The visiting San Pedro Pirates finally made it onto the scoreboard when Jesse Smith scored in the 47th minute of play to cut the deficit to 1.

However, the Belmopan Bandits in the 2nd half of the game was able to put the icing on the cake when Jerome James scored his goal in the 51st minute of play for the 3-1 victory.

Meanwhile, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, Verdes FC and the Belize Defence Force played to a 2-2 draw.

Verdes FC was the first on the scoreboard when Alcides Thomas scored the 1st goal of the game in the 17th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. The lead was further extended when Gilroy Thurton scored his team 2nd goal of the game in the 36th minute of play for a 2-0 lead.

The first half of the game ended 2-0 in favour of the Verdes FC squad. It was not until well into the second half of the game that the visiting Belize Defence Force FC was able to penetrate the defence of the Verdes FC when Shane Flores scored the 1st goal for his team in the 67th minute of play to cut the deficit to a 2-1 affair.

Trymayne Harris in the 81st minute of play was able to score the equalising goal via a penalty kick to tie the score at 2-2.

At the sound of the long whistle the game ended in a 2-2 draw. However, Verdes FC advance to the championship round on an aggregate score of 9-2.

The first game in the championship round is set for Sunday 3rd December, 2017 at 4:00 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium between the Belmopan Bandits and Verdes FC.
