Belmopan Bandits clips the Placencia Assassins in Premier League competition Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize Opening Season Competition continued over the weekend with four games on the schedule.

On Saturday 7th October, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, the defending champions and current leaders in this year’s Opening Season Competition, the Belmopan Bandits, defeated the visiting Placencia Assassins FC by the score of 3-1.

The first half of the game ended in a 0-0 draw and it was not until the 56th minute of play, that the Belmopan Bandits was able to penetrate the defence of the Placencia Assassins that allowed George Welcome to score the 1st goal to give his team a 1-0 lead. However, the lead was short-lived when the Placencia Assassins’ Luis Torres scored the equalising goal in the 62nd minute of play to tie the score at 1-1.

In the 69th minute of play, the Belmopan Bandits’ Elroy Smith untied the score at 2-1 when he scored the 2nd goal of the game for his team. The game remained for the most part a 2-1 affair until the 90th minute of play when Darwin Bermudez scored his team 3rd goal of the game for the 3-1 victory and the lead in the competition.

Meanwhile, at the MCC Grounds, the Belize Defence Force FC blanked the visiting San Pedro Pirates by the score of 1-0.

The only goal of the game was scored by Jarren Lambey in the 60th minute of play for the Belize Defence Force.

The competition continued on Sunday 8th October, with the match -up between the Verdes FC and the Freedom Fighters FC at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, in which Verdes FC prevailed over the Freedom Fighters by the score of 3-1.

The host team, Verdes FC was the first onto the scoreboard when Jarret Davis scored the 1st goal of the game in the 20th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. However, in the 38th minute of play, Freedom Fighters Chackery Martinez was able to score the equalising goal that tied the score at 1-1. The first half of the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

It was not until the 78th minute of play that Verdes’ Alcides Thomas scored the 2nd goal of the game that gave his team a 2-1 lead.

The final goal of the game was scored by Jarret Davis in the 91st minute of play that gave Verdes FC the 3-1 victory.

In the final game of the day that was played out at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, Police United defeated Wagiya FC by the score of 6-3.

The goals for Police United were scored by Marlon Meza in the 34th minute of play, Daniel Jimenez in the 44th, 68th and 92nd minutes of play, Carlton Thomas in the 55th minute of play and Camilo Sanchez in the 74th minute of play. Meanwhile, the goals for Wagiya were scored by Horace Avila in the 58th minute of play, Krisean Lopez in the 89th minute and Byron Chavez in the 90th minute of play.

The competition will continue this coming weekend.
