Hon Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General of Belize along with Hon. Carla Barnett Minister of State in the Ministry of Natural Resources held meetings in the Toledo district with Alcaldes and members of the district association of village councils on Thursday August 31. According to Hon. Peyrefitte, the meetings held with the Alcaldes centered on the legitimacy of their appointments. According to the A.G. none of the Alcaldes were sworn in by himself or any representative of his ministry thereby making their positions not legally recognized.

He noted that his discussions with the Alcaldes centered over their duties and responsibilities and he emphasized that those who held positions needed to be fully aware of what those are. To this end his ministry will organize training sessions which must be attended by the Alcaldes before they are sworn in. It has become the norm that Alcaldes have been named to the position without them being rightfully appointed by the Attorney General. According to Hon. Peyrefitte, he is now trying to regularize this practice.

It is expected that with the training being conducted the Alcaldes will have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. There have been numerous complaints against Alcaldes where they are seen abusing their authority and taking on matters where they should not. Among these are land matters which they have no jurisdiction on. The training will held to fix this problem and at the end of it those Alcaldes who attend will be sworn in when the AG visits the Toledo district on September 16th.
